Jobs Day Arrives With the Fed's Playbook Flipped — September 4, 2026
Wall Street closed out a big Thursday rally heading into a jobs-report Friday, with Fed-hike odds cut roughly in half after dovish remarks from Governor Christopher Waller. Futures are little changed ahead of the 8:30 AM ET payrolls report, the last major data point before the September FOMC meeting. Because the Fed's tone under Chair Warsh has turned hawkish this cycle, the usual playbook is inverted — a strong print is the risk to equities today, not a weak one.
Market setup
| S&P 500 futures | +0.04% |
| Nasdaq 100 futures | +0.40% |

| Gold | ~$4,471/oz |
Where the indexes stand
| S&P 500 | 7,747.71 (+1.06%) |

Key levels (dealer gamma)
| SPY (spot ~773) | Call wall 773 (then 778) · Put wall 772 (then 765) |
| QQQ (spot ~718) | Call wall 718 (then 720) · Put wall 716 (then 714) |
Call walls mark strikes where dealer hedging may slow rallies; put walls mark strikes where hedging may cushion dips. These are positioning estimates, not guarantees.
Five things that matter today
- Jobs day flips the usual script. Consensus is roughly +53K payrolls with unemployment steady at 4.1%, but a hot print is now the risk case for stocks given the Fed's hawkish tilt.
- Broadcom's guide overshadowed a blowout quarter. AVGO's Q3 revenue hit $29.6B (+86% y/y) with AI chip revenue up 221% y/y, yet Q4 guidance of $34.8B missed the Street's $35.05B and shares fell 2.74%.
- Thursday's rally was broad and sharp. The Dow's +624-point session was its best in a month and the VIX fell to 14.32 as September rate-hike odds were cut to roughly 50%.
- Dealer gamma has SPY boxed in tight, with call and put walls just one point apart around spot — a setup that favors pinning unless payrolls forces a break.
- Earnings reactions are bifurcated. Copart and DocuSign beat and rallied, while Campbell's missed and Broadcom's guide weighed on shares — this is a stock-picker's tape.
Notable earnings
Already reported (Thursday close): Copart (CPRT) topped estimates and closed +4.42%. DocuSign (DOCU) beat and raised FY27 guidance, jumping roughly +5% after hours. Broadcom (AVGO) beat Q3 estimates but guided Q4 revenue below Street expectations, falling 2.74%. Campbell's (CPB) missed on sales and fell 6.96%.
Still ahead before the open: a thin, mostly small-cap slate including Children's Place (PLCE), New Fortress Energy (NFE), KNOT Offshore Partners (KNOP) and NioCorp (NB).
After the close: nothing large-cap is confirmed for tonight; this week's headline reports are already out.
Notable options flow
| TSLA $400C 9/4 — 0DTE sweep | $520K ask-side |
| QQQ $720C 9/11 — sweep | $1.04M ask-side |
| MU $952.5P 9/4 — 0DTE | $710K, mostly ask |
| AVGO $520C 6/17/27 — LEAPS | $852K ask-side |
| INTC $95C 10/16 — repeated hits | $1.15M ask-side |
| IREN $41C 11/20 — unusual | $555K ask-side |
What to Watch
The 8:30 AM ET payrolls report is the session's single catalyst. A print meaningfully above the ~53K consensus, paired with firm wage growth, would likely push Fed-hike odds back up and pressure both stocks and bonds. A soft print — or another round of negative revisions to prior months — would likely extend Thursday's relief rally. Watch the semiconductor complex for follow-through from Broadcom's guidance-driven pullback, and keep an eye on the SPY 772-773 gamma pocket for signs of a level break.
